How to: Free FIAV bypass
The FIAV (fast idle air valve) is used to help the car idle on extreme cold start ups. There are many different reasons to bypass or even completely delete the FIAV (not recommended as you'll lose your ISC) such as cleaning the engine bay, if you have problems with idle surge, or you just dont want to deal with the coolant lines.
To do the FREE FIAV bypass you will need:
Vise if available
Hammer
A flat head screwdriver
Needle nose pliers or snap ring pliers
silicone
Step 1:
If you have access to a vise, put the throttle body in it with the FIAV facing up so you can have access to it. There will be a freeze plug on the FIAV, that's what you'll need to do the bypass. If you dont have a vise, just flip it so the freeze plug is shown.
In this picture the FIAV is removed. YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE IT FROM THE THROTTLE BODY. THIS IS JUST ONE I HAD LAYING AROUND.
Step 2.
Hit the freeze plug with a screwdriver in the highlighted area.It should fall out of the FIAV. If it doesnt, try hitting it again or prying it out with a screwdriver.
Step 3.
When the freeze plug is out, you will see what looks like a cross with 4 dimples in it. Take your needle nose pliers and put the ends of the pliers in any 2 holes.
Step 4.
Rotate the cross CLOCKWISE. This will be a difficult task as the throttle bodies are old and have been used. There is a spring behind the cross and basically you are compressing it completely. Rotate it clockwise until you cant turn it anymore. I turned mine probably 30-40 times, halfway through it got extremely loose and i thought I broke something but I kept turning it and it bottomed out.
Step 5.
Once the cross is completely bottomed out, take your freeze plug and apply silicone around the rim, and hammer it back into the FIAV. You should now have a bypassed FIAV for free.
Note: you can delete your coolant lines if wanted now. You can also keep the ISC. If you wind up breaking the cross or if the cross wont move, unfortunately you will have to get a bypass plate or another FIAV to try this out on again.
