harness questions
Hello fellow DSMers. I am currently working on my 98 gsx 5spd. Currently im doing a wire tuck/depin on the engine harness, fuse box harness and dash harness (MAYBE ill do the chassis harness later on.
my question is this: does anyone here KNOW and is 100 percent sure weather the 2ga 5spd DASH HARNESS is different from a 2gb 5spd DASH HARNESS?
i have a spare harness i removed from a 96 gsx and im modifying that one to be installed into my 98. but today when i went into my 98 gsx and i looked behind the dash a i saw one or two plugs that i did not recognize on the harness im currently modifying.
thank you in advance
( please no "i think " comments and responses) i know the dash boards are the same but i need to know if the HARNESSES differ in any way.
i would also like to know if these following components maybe removed with out stopping the car from starting also maybe if you can tell me exactly what they are for:
1: clock spring
2: etacs
3: theft starter relay

Re: harness questions
What 2 plugs are you concerned about? The 98-99 dsms have some differences from the 95-97 so it is very likley that something inside the car is not in a 96.
1. I wouldnt remove the clock spring, I know if you keep power steering it will definetly mess it up. I'm not 100% sure if it will affect it if you take p/s out though. My guess would be it will affect it either way.
2. What is etacs?
3. If you remove the complete anti theft system you should be fine. That includes keyless entry. Be advised the theft system loops in with the radio.

Re: harness questions
what is the clock spring exactly?
my power steering is gone.
Electronic Time and Alarm Control System - Mitsubishi - Automotive engineering
yea i plan on removing everything for the theft system and i am also deleting the harness for the amp since the car came equipped with a infinity sound system

Re: harness questions
The clock spring is behind your steering wheel. You know when you make a turn and your wheel straightens out by itself? Thats the clock springs job. I've never heard of etacs but it sounds related to the alarm system. I will look into it for you. When removing the theft system make sure you're not deleting wires for the radio if you're keeping it. Trace the wires, and trace them again until you know what wires go where. I decided to keep keyless entry and I saw how many wires go there. I'm having a bit of a time with the radio harness myself.
Re: harness questions
sorry i used white i thought it might be easy to see...these are in my 98 but i didn't see them in my 96 as i removed the harness
yea i trace everything over and over before deleting it. the previous owner CUT my radio plug so that plug is just loose wires but normally upon assembly dealers twist (pos with neg) for each speaker so you know which ones are speakers and which ones aren't.

Re: harness questions
Is that harness in the picture on the driver side of the dash in cluster of harmess plugs by the fusebox? Any better picture of what it plugs into or of the plug itself disconnected?
Edit: i didnt see the plug in the upper right of the picture. It looks like thats where the a/c evaporator is. Looks to be heater control related.
Edit: looks like the one on the left is the asd relay. Is the thing it plugs into a square looking thing?

Re: harness questions
I'm having a tough time reading the part number. It looks like mb 943059, but it's not valid. I tried different variations and i came up with a part number for a spare tire carrier lol. Let me do some more digging here.

Flasher unit is for your turn signals. Did you get the new harness from a Talon? The eclipse and talon have different turn signal flasher units, because the differences in the tail lights. Also, if the other plug goes to a square unit that is gold or black, it is a relay. The only relays behind the dash are ABS (awd only) MFI, fuel pump and starter. Mind you fuel pump/starter might be 420a or 4g64 specific.
Re: harness questions
The harness came out of a 96 eclipse awd 5spd. also bolted infront the shifter assembly under the radio were TWO relays i believe which are those? one of them looked normal (on the right) but on the left it had a metal safety pin like the TPS has. (this is in the 96) do you know what im talking about?
EDIT: they shared ONE mounting bracket and were flat on the chassis like the airbag module that goes under the arm rest

Re: harness questions
Do you have pics of said relays? I probably have them still connected on my harness but its too late to run up to the garage.
Edit: i might be mistaken, but i believe I read somewhere awhile back that the eclipse has 2 different flashers units that are year dependant. Dont quote me on this.

Re: harness questions
ok these are the 2 plugs to the 2 relays that i found in the 2ga but that are not present in my 2gb
this is a picture of where those 2 plugs are located (same place as the cigarette lighter plugs)
can you identify these relays? i looked up the part numbers and apparently the relays are universal and used in mutliple locations but i cant see what they are used for
i know the red plug is the steering wheel air bag but what are these other two?
also these two lol
and these....
how about 1, 2(10amp fuse) and 3?
whats this? it was taped to the radio harness
are these two plugs just A POSITIVE distribution source and a ground distribution?
AND FINALLY THE 2 REPLAYS I FOUND IN MY 2GA THAT ARENT IN MY 2GB HELPPPP

Re: harness questions
1. First pic looks like the previously mentioned mfi and fuel pump relay.
2. I dont know what those relays are, i left them alone on my harness. Give me a few to research.
3. As you stated, red is airbag. The other two is wiper switch and multi function switch.
4. Where are those 2 plugs on the harness? I cant tell.
5. Same as above.
6. Same as 4.
7. Looks to be a check terminal of some sort. Leave it be, trust me.
8. You are correct they are positve and ground blocks. You can remove specific wires as long as they dont split into another wire somewhere down the harness.
9. Looks to be mfi and fuel pump relay.

Re: harness questions
Oh. Ok. Well, the only thing on the drivers side are: power mirror switch, fog light switch , dimmer switch, and cruise control. Are you deleting your airbags?
Re: harness questions
well...mirror and fog light switch is on the UPPER dash harness the one that stays ON the dash when the dash is removed..this is the lower dash harness remember could they possibly be brake switch? clutch switch? relays?
ALSO what do i do about a "flasher" since my 2gb has one but i clearly dont see a plug for it on my 2ga harness?
im starting to think i should be using a 2gb harness to avoid later headaches and complications

Re: harness questions
Forgot about the clutch switch. If your knee deep already with this harness, starting another one would be a pain. But if i was you i would use te correct one but theres a solution for everything. Im going to do some digging about that flasher problem because its got methinking now.
Re: harness questions
Alright so i have a plan.... here it is...im not going to stress myself about this harness ima finish it... im going to get the car running with the harness that is ALREADY in the car... once i know i have NO issues im going to substitute it for this one and if i have a problem then ill just modify my 2gb harness its gonna suck having to do ANOTHER harness but "its the price you pay to play"

Re: harness questions
this is the response i got on another site
"Yes they are different. Small differences but different. The problems you'll run into are the SRS box below the arm rest and a few connectors in the centre console. Your main problem is definitely going to be the SRS system (that I remember).
I found this out after replacing my dash harness (located under the dash - not in it) and realized the connectors had slight differences between the two, small differences but differences... "
